About Unix Timestamp Converter

The Unix Timestamp Converter reads a number of seconds, milliseconds, microseconds or nanoseconds since 1 January 1970 UTC and shows the instant it names: as a readable date in the time zone you pick and in UTC, as ISO 8601 with the right offset, as the IMF-fixdate HTTP uses in its Date and Expires headers, and as a distance from now. The unit is worked out from the size of the number, since a 10-digit value from a shell, a 13-digit one from JavaScript and a 19-digit one from Go or InfluxDB all describe this decade. Nanosecond values are handled as exact integers, so the last three digits survive instead of being rounded off the way JSON.parse rounds them. The lower half runs the other way: type a date and a clock time and get the timestamp, with a warning when that clock time occurs twice or not at all because of a daylight saving change. The time zones come from the tz database your browser ships, so historical offsets are the real ones for that date.

The guide behind this tool

Ten Digits or Thirteen: Reading a Unix Timestamp Without Guessing

Milliseconds read as seconds land in the year 55,840. Why the digit count gives the unit away, why JSON rounds off nanoseconds, and where 2038 still bites.

How to use Unix Timestamp Converter

  1. 1

Paste the timestamp from your log, database row or API response. Commas, spaces and underscores between the digits are ignored.

  2. 2

Check the line under the box that says which unit it was read as. If the guess is wrong, pick the unit yourself.

  3. 3

Choose the time zone you want to read it in. It starts on UTC, and once you pick another zone UTC stays listed next to it. Type a city or an offset such as GMT+2 to find a zone quickly.

  4. 4

Click any row to copy that format.

  5. 5

To go the other way, enter a date and time under Date to timestamp, or press Use current time and adjust from there.

Frequently Asked Questions

Count the digits. Anything from September 2001 to November 2286 is 10 digits in seconds, 13 in milliseconds, 16 in microseconds and 19 in nanoseconds. The converter does the same check by magnitude, so a value under 100 billion is taken as seconds, and it tells you which reading it used. If you see a date in the year 55,000, you fed milliseconds into something expecting seconds. If you see 20 January 1970, it was the other way round.
