About Temperature Converter

The Temperature Converter turns one reading into Celsius, Fahrenheit, Kelvin, Rankine and Réaumur at once, and prints the formula under each result, so you can check the arithmetic or reuse it in a spreadsheet. It has two modes because temperature has two kinds of number. A reading on a thermometer converts with an offset: 20 °C is 68 °F. A change in temperature converts without one: a 20 °C rise is a 36 °F rise. Most converters only do the first and quietly give the wrong answer for the second, which is how a 1.5 °C warming target turns into a nonsensical 34.7 °F. Values below absolute zero are refused with an explanation rather than converted, and a table of reference points, from absolute zero to a moderate oven, loads any of them with one click.

The guide behind this tool

Why a 10 °C Rise Is 18 °F, Not 50 °F

The +32 in the Fahrenheit formula moves the zero, and a change in temperature has no zero to move. Where each scale's zero came from, and why ratios need kelvin.

How to use Temperature Converter

  1. 1

Type a temperature, either as a number or with its unit attached, such as 98.6 °F, 300 K or -40 C.

  2. 2

Pick the scale it is in from the "From" dropdown. A unit you typed sets the dropdown for you.

  3. 3

Leave "A temperature" selected for a reading, or choose "A change in temperature" for a rise, a drop or a tolerance.

  4. 4

Read the result in every other scale, with the formula that produced it underneath.

  5. 5

Click a result to copy the number, or click a reference point to convert it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Multiply by 9/5 and add 32, so °F = °C × 9/5 + 32. Going the other way you subtract first: °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9. The order matters, and it is the step most often done backwards when converting by hand. The converter shows the right formula for whichever pair of scales you are looking at.
