About PNG to WebP Converter

The PNG to WebP Converter shrinks PNG images while keeping what usually makes them PNGs in the first place, the transparent background. JPG would make the same files small too, but it fills every transparent area with a solid color, which is no use for a logo, a product cut-out or an interface sprite that sits on top of a page. WebP stores the color image with lossy compression and the alpha channel separately and losslessly, so edges and shadows keep their exact transparency while the file typically drops to a fraction of the PNG's size. Google's published comparison put lossy WebP with alpha at around a third of the size of the equivalent PNG. Quality starts at 80, which is level with a high-quality JPG to the eye. Because the color is compressed lossily, flat graphics and text can show slight softening, so each result can be compared with its PNG at full size. One limit to know: Safari displays WebP but cannot save it from a web page, so this page needs Chrome, Edge or Firefox to produce WebP files.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, fully. WebP supports an 8-bit alpha channel exactly as PNG does. In a lossy WebP the alpha is stored in its own chunk and compressed losslessly, so the shape of the transparent area, soft shadows and anti-aliased edges included, comes through exactly even though the colors are compressed. The checkerboard behind each preview shows it survived.
