About PNG to JPG Converter

The PNG to JPG Converter is mostly for one situation: a photograph, or a screenshot of one, that ended up as a PNG and is now far too large to email, upload or keep in quantity. PNG stores every pixel losslessly, which is ideal for a logo and wasteful for a photo, and the same image as a JPG at quality 90 is often a fifth of the size with no difference you can point to. The converter is built around the two things that go wrong in this conversion. Transparency has nowhere to go in a JPG, so instead of letting the browser turn it black, the transparent areas are filled with a color you choose before encoding, which also keeps anti-aliased edges and shadows blending into the right background. And not every PNG should be a JPG. Text, line art and flat-color graphics pick up visible ringing around their edges in JPEG, so every result can be compared with its original at full size before you keep it, and the size change is shown on each card so a file that got bigger is obvious.

How to use PNG to JPG Converter

  1. 1

Drop your PNG files onto the box, or click to choose them. Up to fifty go in one batch.

  2. 2

They convert to JPG at quality 90 straight away, which is the setting to leave alone unless you need a smaller file.

  3. 3

If the PNGs have transparent areas, set Background color to whatever the image will sit on, so the edges blend into the right color.

  4. 4

Read the size line on each card. A photograph should shrink a lot. A screenshot of text may barely shrink, which is a sign it is better left as PNG.

  5. 5

Use Compare with original on anything with text or sharp lines, then download the JPG, or the whole batch as a ZIP.

Frequently Asked Questions

Because JPG has no alpha channel and the transparent pixels have to become something. A transparent pixel in a canvas has a color of zero, which is black, and a converter that encodes without first painting a background passes that black straight through. Here the background color is painted underneath before the image is drawn, so transparency becomes white, or whatever you choose, and semi-transparent edges blend into it properly.
