About JPG to PNG Converter

The JPG to PNG Converter writes your JPG photos out as PNG files, for the cases where PNG is the format actually required: an upload form or app store that asks for PNG, a design tool you want to hand a lossless file, or an image you are about to edit several times and do not want to lose a little more of on every save. It is worth being straight about what the conversion does. PNG is lossless, so nothing further is lost from this point on, and every later save of the PNG is exact. It does not bring back anything the JPG already discarded, so the compression artefacts present in the photo carry over faithfully. And the file will be larger, usually several times larger, because PNG has to store each pixel exactly, including the fine noise that JPEG compression leaves behind. Any rotation stored in the photo's EXIF data is applied to the pixels on the way through, so the picture is upright even in programs that ignore that flag. Each card shows the size before and after, and up to fifty photos convert in one batch.

The guide behind this tool

Why a JPG Gets Bigger as a PNG, and When Converting Is Still Right

PNG's five filters and DEFLATE thrive on repetition, and a photograph has almost none. The numbers, and the cases where the extra megabytes are worth it.

How to use JPG to PNG Converter

  1. 1

Drop your JPG files onto the box, or click to pick them. Fifty at a time is the limit.

  2. 2

They are converted to PNG immediately. There is no quality to set, since PNG is lossless.

  3. 3

Check the size on each card. Expect growth, often three to six times for a camera photo.

  4. 4

Download the single PNG, or the whole set as a ZIP. Each file keeps its original name with a .png extension.

  5. 5

If you only needed the image to be accepted somewhere and the PNG is too big for its limit, switch Convert to WebP, which most current sites accept and which keeps the file small.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. The JPG's compression already removed detail, and converting cannot invent it back. What you get is an exact copy of the JPG's pixels in a format that will not lose anything more. That is useful if you are going to edit and save the image repeatedly, since each JPG save compresses again, but the PNG will never look better than the JPG it came from.
