About WebP to JPG Converter

The WebP to JPG Converter turns WebP images into JPGs for the places that still will not accept WebP: upload forms that list JPG and PNG only, older photo editors, printing services, some email clients and a lot of office software. JPG is the most widely readable image format there is, and for a photograph it keeps the file small, which is why it is usually the better target than PNG. Two decisions come with it, and both are exposed rather than buried. The first is quality. Most WebPs from the web are already lossy, so converting to JPG is a second lossy pass, and the default of 90 is set high on purpose so that the second pass adds as little as possible. The second is transparency. JPG has no alpha channel, so a WebP with a see-through background has to be laid onto a solid color, and you choose that color instead of getting black. Every converted file keeps its name with a .jpg extension, shows its size beside the original, and can be compared at full size with a slider.

WebP to JPG: What a Second Lossy Pass Actually Costs

VP8 predicts 16×16 macroblocks and JPEG cuts a fixed 8×8 grid, so their artefacts never line up. Where the double compression shows and which quality hides it.

How to use WebP to JPG Converter

  1. 1

Drop your WebP files onto the box, or click to choose them. Up to fifty go in one batch.

  2. 2

Each one is converted to JPG at quality 90 as it arrives, which is the setting to keep unless the file has to be small.

  3. 3

If your images have transparent areas, set the Background color to whatever they will sit on. White suits a document or a form, and the page color suits a website.

  4. 4

Changed a setting? Press Convert again and the batch is redone with the new values.

  5. 5

Press Compare with original on any card to check the result at full size, then download the JPG, or all of them as a ZIP.

Frequently Asked Questions

A little, and how much is up to the quality setting. If the WebP was lossy, which most web images are, its artefacts are baked in and the JPG encoder then adds its own on top, because the two formats divide the picture differently: JPEG works in fixed 8×8 blocks, while lossy WebP predicts blocks from their neighbours and filters the edges between them. At 90 the second pass is very hard to see. Below about 75 it starts to show on gradients and around text. The comparison slider is the honest way to check.
