About Fraction Calculator

The Fraction Calculator adds, subtracts, multiplies and divides fractions, mixed numbers and whole numbers, and gives the answer in lowest terms. Every step is written out: converting mixed numbers, finding the least common denominator, rewriting each fraction over it, and reducing by the greatest common divisor. The result also comes as a mixed number, a percent and an exact decimal with the repeating digits marked, so 7/12 shows as 0.583 with a bar over the final 3.

Type the first fraction, numerator on top and denominator below. Fill in Whole as well for a mixed number such as 2 1/3.

  2. 2

Pick +, −, × or ÷ and enter the second fraction. Leave it empty to simplify the first fraction on its own.

  3. 3

Read the result in lowest terms, with the mixed number, decimal and percent beside it.

  4. 4

Follow the numbered steps to see how it was worked out, then copy the fraction or the decimal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Put the whole part in Whole and the fraction in Numerator and Denominator, so 3 1/4 is 3, 1 and 4. For a negative mixed number, put the minus sign on the whole part: −3 1/4 means −(3 + 1/4), which is −13/4.
