Robots.txt Generator & Tester

Allow or block 40+ search engines and AI crawlers, or paste your own file, then test URLs and see which rule decides

What kind of site is this?

What about AI crawlers?

Any pages to keep crawlers out of? · optional

Most sites can skip this. It stops crawling, and it does not hide a page from Google.

Where is your sitemap? · optional

AdvancedSet any of 43 crawlers one by one, add rules for one crawler, or set a crawl delay.

Crawlers one by one

About Robots.txt Generator & Tester

The Robots.txt Generator & Tester writes the file from a form and then answers the question that matters: will this crawler fetch this URL? Start from a preset for an open site, a staging site, WordPress or an online store, add your own paths, and set more than 40 search engines, AI crawlers and SEO tools to Default, Allow or Block. Each one comes with a note on what blocking it really does, drawn from its owner's documentation, and one click can block AI training while leaving AI search answers alone. To check a file you already have, paste it in. You see at a glance which crawlers have full access, partial access or none, and each URL you test comes back allowed or blocked along with the exact line that decided it. Matching follows RFC 9309 and Google's specification: a crawler reads only the most specific group that names it, the longest matching rule wins, and Allow wins a tie.

Robots.txt Blocks Crawling, Not Indexing

Disallow won't take a page out of Google, and it can stop noindex from being read. How crawlers really pick a group and settle conflicts between rules.

How to use Robots.txt Generator & Tester

  1. 1

Pick a starting point, or switch to Test my own file and paste what is on your site now.

  2. 2

Choose what AI crawlers may do, add any paths to block and the full URL of your sitemap. Advanced lets you set each crawler by hand.

  3. 3

Read the file check and fix anything it flags, such as a path missing its leading slash.

  4. 4

Paste the URLs you care about into the tester and choose a crawler. Include pages that must stay crawlable, since those are the costly ones to block by accident.

  5. 5

Copy or download the file and upload it to the root of your domain.

Frequently Asked Questions

Because a crawler obeys one group only. If your file has a User-agent: Googlebot group, Googlebot reads that group and skips everything under User-agent: *, while Bingbot, with no group of its own, reads the * rules. Pick each crawler in the tester to see which group it lands on. To apply a rule to both, repeat it in both groups.
